AM General traces back to the early 1900s from a company called Overland, and the Humvee is the evolutionary manifesto of the original Jeep.  AM General didn't actually get its current name until the early 1970s, when AMC, or American Motor Company, decided to separate their military division into AM General, as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Humvee is located in South Bend.  The Hummer brand is also traced to this company.  Most people think it is owned by GMC, but GMC is involved and does now own the Hummer brand.  GMC and AM General joined forces in the late 1990s for AM General to make the Hummer, and for GMC to market and distribute the Hummer brand.  In 2006 the H1 production stopped, and GMC does now own the Hummer brand.

AM General, however continues strong, making its Humvee vehicles.

Humvee was created in 1984 and is still made to this day.  It has been in production for over 25 years and although it is still being made it's future is uncertain as contractors bid to phase it out with more modern tactical vehicles.  The idea is not to replace the humvee, but to upgrade it.  It is like the evolution of the Jeep, as the Humvee is a natural upgrade from the military's original jeep which was used in war efforts for nearly 30 years.

It will be interesting to see where this spectacular military automobile evolves into.  Some suggested replacements are the Millenworks LUV, the Ultra-AP, or maybe even the OSH-KOSH M-ATV.  Let's hope that the Humvee continues on, and/or it is continued on in the commercial market.

To discover the efficacy and efficiency of which of these vehicles will work for you you need to ask yourself what purposes do you intend with the vehicle. Do you plan to drive the vehicle exclusively on the road, or do you want to go on weekend safaris or excursions?

If you answered yes to the first question than the Hummer H2 is for you. As a civilian vehicle it was not intended for offroad or heavy 4 wheel drive capability. It's marketed as a luxury vehicle with a price tag of $50K+, and is used by higher income individuals that are looking for a fun vehicle for the road rather than the original H1's purpose.

If you answered yes to the second question than the Humvee (or Hummer H1) is for you. The Hummer H1, was built for the civilian, but is the closest model of the original Humvee available, and provides almost identical specs. With its wider profile, better suspension, and higher clearance, the H1 will do more than the H2 could ever dream of. However, the H1 is harder to find, and has a higher price tag, even used. It also has less comforts than the H2, and is a rougher ride. But it is still seen as a luxury vehicle available to few and still has the status symbol of the H2.

Also, consider parts and repair. The H2 is easier to find parts and can be worked on at any GM facility, whereas H1 parts are harder to find, and less technicians really know the H1 in and out.

So off-road and rugged = H1, luxury and comfort = H2. That's what it comes down to. That and personal taste.
